The Ice:
Now that we have had some cold weather, the slush and wet conditions on the ice froze opening up the vehicle travel across the main lake. We have 25” or more throughout the entire main lake basin. Due to the lack of snow, we are continuing to make ice each evening, make sure you pack your auger extension as it’s needed in most permanent shacks right now. We are still finding some pressure ridges around Pelican Island, Stony Point, Grassy Point and the Bear Island areas. Please use caution if you choose to venture towards those areas with your vehicle as anglers are finding their way around most of them.
The Fishing:
Walleye fishing continues to be a night bite for most of our anglers. Finding a 12’ – 16’ rocky reefs to set up on works best right now for the evening and lowlight bite. Glow Jigging Spoons tipped with a minnow fished aggressively are working best. Make sure you have a setline with a full Shiner or Rainbow along with your jigging line. Also, check the steep edges of the main lake breaks as they have been producing a few fish as well. The more you move, your odds increase!
During the day, stay on the move and get away from the crowds to get some fish topside. The breaks and areas around Pelican, Submarine and others have less pressure therefore, catching more fish. The Perch action was good this past weekend around the backside of Bear Island and on the weed and mud edges. Many anglers were happy to find a good amount of Perch near the gravel/sand transitions where these fish were on the rocks a few weeks back. Most anglers were using setlines with a small Fathead or Shiner. For your jigging rod use a small jig with a blood worm imitation. Keep moving and use your electronics to find these hungry schools.
Crappie and Bluegills continue to be caught on the smaller local lakes. Look towards the edges of the basins and be prepared to drill some holes until you find the suspended schools of fish. Use your favorite tungsten jigs and favorite plastics to trigger these fish.
The Prep:
Stop in the office and ask about the $79.99 Guest Room offer, we’ve got nice beds, warm heat and a great shower! Yes, we have a great selection of bait (Waxies, Shiners, Rainbows and Fatheads) and on ice gear to rent. The Off Sale beer cooler is full and has beer for you! While you’re in grabbing your road pass, get a complementary map of Leech Lake with the ice roads and other hot spots marked.
Good luck on all your outdoor adventures and we hope to see you on the ice.
